An interesting1 discovery has been made in the isles of Scilly. The famous logan, or logging stone, within a mile or two of the Land's End, has been one of the sights of West Cornwall for many years, and thousands of tourists have, under the direction of the local guides, been able with a slight exertion to set the heavy mass of granite in motion, so evenly is it poised. But the log-an rock is put entirely in the shade, says a late London dispatch, by the discovery at Peninnis, St. Mary's, Scilly, of what is believed to be the largest logging stone in Britain. Its existence was disclosed quite by .accident. Edward McDonald and a friend were strolling around Pen innis when a squall of wind and rain came on, and they sought shelter by the side of an enormous mass of rock. While leaning against it Mr. McDonald fancied he felt the rock vibrate, and an examination was made with the result that the two j-oung men found that by their combined strength the mass could easily be made to move. Some time was spent by them,in proving their dis covery and measurements were taken. The rock is pyramidieal in shape and of the following dimensions: Mean breadth. 11 feet; length, 19 feet; height, 21 feet; circumference, 55 feet; and 08 feet over all. It contains 4.38!) cubic feet, and is estimated to wciprh about 320 tons. It has since been visit ed by a large number of persons who have confirmed the discovery. It is remarkably- well balanced ami can be put in motion by one person, the momen tum continuing after the power has been withdrawn. It has been called the McDonald logging stone. A simi lar but much smaller rock was found in the same vicinity by Thomas Sim mons while he war. in search of the new log-ring titonc. It is flat on top and can be logged by two or three persons sitting on the top, see-saw fashion. It is estimated to weigh 100 tons. A GOOD LESSON. Respcct for the Court X.tu: ;Iit :in Appli- cant xc5r C'ir.zf:isnp. Judge Ferris is a man who believes in maintaining the dignity of the courts. While he dees not uso his po sition to ho captious about it, yet he never fails to impress on a person who displays a lack of respect for the court and througli.it the law, that the court must be respected and itsdignity main tained. An instance how a man can be taught that respect for the courts means re spect for the law was given by .iudge Ferris. The person referred to was an applicant for citizenship. Ho went to court dressed as if he had left a cow stable, where he had been cleaning the stalls. His clothes were dirty and his boots were covered with, filth. When the judge had looked him over he asked if lie i-ealized he was in a court of justice and was an applicant f;r -nc of the ffreatest privileges tluit could be granted him.
